Did you know the Xbox One can play a host of classic games you originally bought for the Xbox and Xbox 360? It’s called backwards compatibility, and it greatly expands the capabilities of what’s already an incredibly capable console.
If you want to know how to play your classic games, which games are available and how much they cost, you’ve come to the right place.
What is Xbox One backwards compatibility?
It’s the ability for the Xbox One, Xbox One S and Xbox One X to play games originally made for both the Xbox 360 and the original Xbox console.
Both consoles are older than the Xbox One – the Xbox 360 was released in 2005, and the original Xbox back in 2002.
There are hundreds of classic games that are supported, either as a download or by placing the original disc into the new console.
Can I play Xbox 360 and Xbox games?
Yes, you absolutely can play both. The good news is that there are now over 500 Xbox 360 games supported so the likelihood is that if it was a game that was released on the 360 it will now run on your brand-new Xbox One.
Some games will even look better on your Xbox One thanks to the fact that it’s much more powerful console or through new enhancements made by the developers who created the game.
There are only around 31 original Xbox games supported at the moment but Xbox is adding support for more titles all the time.
How does Xbox One backwards compatibility work?
There are two ways to play a backwards compatibility game: either buy it and download it from the Xbox Store on your Xbox One console or if you still own the physical disc, insert that into your console.
If you still have the disc with you, insert it into your new console and the game will be downloaded to your Xbox’s storage. You will still need the disc inserted while you are playing.
What about multiplayer?
Yes, you’ll still be able to play with friends, provided they own the game on Xbox 360.
How much does Xbox One backwards compatibility cost?
It’s free to play games you already own – as long as they are on the backwards compatible list of games.
If you don’t own the games you can buy them as a download from the Xbox Store on your new console. Or you can buy the original disc from a second-hand shop or Amazon. They range in price from as little as £5 all the way up to £29.99.
Some also have a range of extras you can buy, such as more levels. These are generally fairly cheap, about a pound or two, but again can go up into double figures.
